Crumbling Land, Noah Gotlib

Crumbling Land is the culmination of several years of research and travel documenting the under-reported phenomenon most often known as "managed retreat"—the government-organized abandonment of land and infrastructure due to climate change. The ideals of homeownership and stability—the foundation of the American Dream—are being undone through urban triage. Once meticulously divided by fences, zoning laws, and neighbourhood covenants, these abandoned landscapes become open, undefined spaces stripped of their speculative value.
The exhibition documents these shifting landscapes, tracing the transformation of communities displaced by climate migration through film and photography of over three dozen sites of "managed retreat" across 10 states and provinces.
